3D Concrete Printing a Staircase - NEOM Wetland
Client
NEOM (Design & Construction Sector)
Project
Wetland Development
Project type
Large-scale Architecture
Date
November 2024
Location
NC2, NEOM, Saudi Arabia
Project Importance
- The client required a custom staircase solution for an uneven slope, avoiding traditional steel or cast-in-place methods to support their sustainability goals.
- A 3D printed concrete staircase was developed to reduce material usage and enable easy installation.
Scope of Work (TamVinci)
- Customized design based on site conditions
- 3D scanning and slope adaptation
- Printing and installation supervision
Key Challenge & Solution
- The existing slope was uneven and not suitable for standard installation.
- Using 3D scanning and digital modeling, the staircase was designed to match the exact terrain and printed in modular parts for better accuracy and assembly.
Key Data
- Dimensions: 6150 × 810 × 4500 mm (length and height of the stairs)
- Material: TamVicrete 3D Concrete (White)
- Layer Width: 30 mm
- Printing Time: ~120 minutes
- Estimated Weight: ~1200 kg
- Single Stair Segment: 2195mm x 165mm x 1500mm
Installation
- The staircase consists of three modular 3D printed segments.
- All segments were positioned on-site, aligned, and leveled to
match the slope.
- No direct connection was made between the segments.
- They were secured by fixing them to the slope using cement
mortar.
Outcome
This project highlights the advantage of 3D printing in delivering customized, sustainable, and efficient construction solutions for complex site conditions.
